Wave (or your description of it) reminds me a lot of Dos Passos' U.S.A trilogy.. Has your work on modernist literature extended to him, and/or can you recommend a good essay on him?
It’s very much like USA, except characters don’t recur as often. I remember reading some extraordinary passages by Sartre on Dos Passos in his essays on American literature, and I love Michael Denning’s chapter on him from The Cultural Front. The great essay on those books has not yet been written, imo
Thank you for this post, Jon. How long did you spend working on this, and what was the impetus? I just looked up Evelyn Scott at bookshop.org and on Amazon, and it looks like most of her stuff is out of print. Do you know of any plans for reissue?
UTennessee Press keeps The Narrow House in print for course adoption on regional modernism syllabi, but I don’t think anything else is currently in a fresh edition. More than anything I want NYRB or ND or one of the prestige houses to do a new edition of Escapade now that it’s hit public domain, but don’t know of anything in the works
I love this. Thank you for attending to the work of a writer who received neither the attention nor care that she deserved.
That excerpted scene of Winnie cajoling May into producing the correct emotions to meet her needs .... chilling to this very day.
Thank you for this incredible essay. Rescuing work from oblivion and correcting the ledger like this is so valuable.
